Chapter 7: Personal Wellness – Whole Health Options.
Health and Well-Being should be aligned with your goals and preferences. Practical strategies that promote personal wellness can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of headache attacks.
- Find a whole health contact
- Learn what other veterans are doing
- Complete your own personal health inventory
Personal Wellness:
- Stay well-hydrated (aim for at least 8 cups of water a day)
- Maintain a nutritious diet (focus on whole foods and reduce processed or junk food)
- Ensure plenty of quality rest (7-9 hours per night)
- Incorporate regular exercise (at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week)
- Cut back/or eliminate alcohol consumption, reduce caffeine intake
- If applicable, deploy efforts to quit smoking, vaping, and any tobacco use
Immediate Relief Tactics:
- Use cold or warm compress on forehead or neck
- Sip herbal teas (such as chamomile or peppermint)
- Mindfulness or meditation
Preventive Measures:
- Monitor food (identify possible contributing factors) with your diary and avoid foods that may be contributing to the headache. Discuss with your healthcare provider whether an anti-inflammatory diet might help you.
- Consider magnesium supplements (consult with a healthcare provider)
- Explore specific vitamin supplements (such as B2 or CoQ10)
Complementary Therapies:
- Try acupuncture sessions
- Schedule regular massage therapy sessions
