Chapter 2: The Patient-Provider Relationship: Planning for a Successful Visit
A successful visit to your healthcare provider involves several key elements:
- Dedicated Appointment: Schedule an appointment to discuss your headache symptoms and nothing else. Ask for a 15–30-minute appointment. (This appointment will be scheduled a few weeks or more in the future. Get this on the calendar. If you don’t have a provider already, you can find a provider through Veteran’s Affairs or TRICARE.
- Preparation: Before the appointment, gather all relevant medical records (Top 10 list) that includes a list of current medications, and any questions or concerns you want to address. A crucial part of your preparation is to maintain a headache, starting with a seven day diary: VA 7-day diary
- For the week leading up to your visit, track the frequency (how often), duration (how long), and intensity (on a scale of 1-10) of your headache. Additionally, if possible, start keeping a three-month diary: that captures patterns and contributing factors, as well as any treatments you've tried.
- This detailed information can provide valuable insights for your provider: VA 3-month diary
- Clear Communication: Be open and honest about your symptoms, medical history, and any changes you've experienced since your last visit. Use specific examples from your headache journals to illustrate your concerns, and don’t hesitate to ask if something isn’t clear.
- Setting Goals: Discuss what you hope to achieve during the visit, whether it’s exploring treatment options, managing side effects, or understanding lifestyle changes. This helps focus the conversation and ensures that your needs are addressed.
- What matters most to you?
- What do you want to do that you currently are unable to do because of the headache attacks?
- Active Engagement: Take an active role in the discussion. Ask questions about your diagnosis, treatment options, and potential side effects. Express your preferences or concerns—this fosters a collaborative relationship with your provider.
- Follow-Up Plan: Before leaving, ensure you have a clear understanding of the next steps, whether it’s scheduling follow-up appointments, getting referrals, or completing tests. Confirm any necessary instructions for care at home. It helps to ask that they be in writing.
- Documentation: Write down important points from the visit, including any new medications, treatment plans, and referrals. This will help you stay organized and informed about your healthcare journey.
- Advocacy: If something doesn’t feel right or if you have lingering concerns, voice them. Advocating for your health is essential, and a good provider will appreciate your proactive approach.
By focusing on these elements, including maintaining your headache journals, you can create a productive environment that leads to better health outcomes and a stronger partnership with your healthcare team.
